A night at a good wilderness lodge costs anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and a guest often decides where to spend it from a phone. The lodges that win those bookings directly don't do it with bigger photos. They answer the guest's practical questions on the page: what does it cost, what's included, are my dates free, and why should I book with you and not an agent?
Below are the seven habits we saw on the strongest sites, each with real examples you can visit. Every example was checked in September 2026. Sites change, so some details may have moved since.
Habit
Put the price on the page, not in a PDF
The most common gap we saw was rates hidden in a download, or not published at all. Guests on a phone won't open a PDF, and a guest who can't find a price goes to an agent to get one. The best sites show rates in plain tables, by season, for the next two years.
- Idube Game Reserve Sabi Sand, South Africa
Rate tables on the page for 2026, 2027 and interim 2028, by season, with sharing, single and child rates side by side.
- Angama Mara Masai Mara, Kenya
Rates in US dollars per person per night by season, with the single-traveller and child policies written out in full.
- Etendeka Mountain Camp Damaraland, Namibia
Rates, deposit terms and cancellation policy on one page.
- Great Bear Lodge Great Bear Rainforest, Canada
2026 and 2027 prices as page text, split by spring, summer and autumn with dates, for example a Spring row (May 7 to June 29) priced at CAD$4,075 for 4 nights.
Habit
Say exactly what the price includes
"Fully inclusive" means different things at every camp. Guests comparing two lodges need to know whether park fees, drinks and transfers are in the number. The best sites list inclusions and exclusions line by line, and some price each exclusion.
- Volcanoes Safaris Rwanda & Uganda
Spells out what's included down to "signature cocktails, cellar collection wines (except French champagne), single malt whiskeys, laundry services" and all massages.
- Garonga Safari Co. Makalali, South Africa
Explains what "fully inclusive" covers, from game drives and sleep-outs to WiFi, laundry and 24/7 medical advice.
- Angama Mara Masai Mara, Kenya
Prices each extra, from park fees to a private vehicle, so the full cost of a stay is clear before anyone enquires.
- Lapa Rios Lodge Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Lists which meals are included on arrival, full and departure days, then what isn't: "Private transfers, alcoholic beverages, … spa treatments, optional or private tours, incidentals."
Habit
Let guests check dates themselves
Almost every weaker site we looked at ended in an enquiry form, sometimes with a reply time of up to two days. Guests who are ready to book want to see whether their dates are free now. The best sites put a date search where guests can't miss it.
- Garonga Safari Co. Makalali, South Africa
A check-in and check-out search on the homepage, connected to a live booking system.
- Governors' Camp Collection Masai Mara, Kenya
Each camp has its own "Check availability" and "Book now" buttons, with an enquiry form kept for guests who want help.
- Singita Several countries
One availability search across every lodge, with dates, guests, region and lodge filters.
Habit
Give guests a reason to book direct
An agent's commission is built into the rate the guest pays, so a direct booking keeps that margin with the lodge. The best sites don't just allow direct booking: they say why it's better for the guest.
- Umlani Bushcamp Timbavati, South Africa
Offers "only available through our website", with "Book direct for best value" on the homepage.
- Onguma Safari Camps Etosha, Namibia
A dedicated book-direct page promising the best available rate, plus a free service that helps plan the rest of the Namibia trip.
Habit
Price whole trips, not just nights
Most guests plan a safari, not a night in one camp. Showing a priced sample trip answers the question "what will this cost me?" in one line.
- Kicheche Safari Camps Masai Mara & Laikipia, Kenya
Priced sample safaris on the homepage, such as three nights in the Mara from a stated price per person sharing.
- Machaba Safaris Okavango Delta, Botswana
Multi-camp packages priced by season, with internal transfers included and the exclusions named.
- Governors' Camp Collection Masai Mara, Kenya
Sample itineraries from a three-night classic Mara safari to an eight-night bush-and-beach trip.
- Sukau Rainforest Lodge Borneo, Malaysia
Thirteen priced trips from three to eight days, each with a day-by-day plan, what's included and what isn't.
Habit
Be honest about who the camp is for
The right guest books faster when the site is clear about what the stay is like, and the wrong guest self-selects out before an awkward review.
- Etendeka Mountain Camp Damaraland, Namibia
Tells guests up front about bucket showers, a two-hour 4x4 transfer from the main road, and that "Safari's are not fast paced". It "appeals to the traveller who is prepared to step outside of their comfort zone".
- Bamurru Plains Top End, Australia
Says up front that children must be 10 or older, dining is shared, there's no Wi-Fi or phone signal on purpose, and the eco bungalows are fan-cooled with mesh walls.
Habit
Give people a reason to come back
Most safari guests research for months before they book. A site that posts regularly keeps a lodge in front of them the whole time.
- Londolozi Sabi Sand, South Africa
A blog that currently posts every day, with an archive going back to 2009 and recurring series such as "Virtual Safari" and "The Week in Pictures".
- Aigas Field Centre Scottish Highlands, UK
An active journal with regular posts and a running "Wildcats behind the scenes" series, alongside whole programme weeks priced on the page.
Common mistakes
The mistakes we saw most often
These came up again and again on the sites that didn't make the list. We've kept them anonymous: the point is to check your own site, not anyone else's.
- Rates only in a downloadable PDF, unreadable on a phone and invisible to search.
- No price anywhere, so guests go to an agent to find one.
- A "live availability" page that turns out to be an enquiry form.
- The main booking button leaves the lodge's own site before any rates are shown.
- Out-of-date copyright years, old seasonal offers or expired policies left on the homepage.
- Prices without a currency, or without saying what's included.
- "Contact us for specials" instead of listing them.
- Every route ends in an enquiry, with no way to check dates.
The numbers
Why it matters: the numbers
what most global online travel agents charge per booking, according to booking-engine provider NightsBridge. Source: NightsBridge
the wider range ResRequest gives for OTA commission, depending on location, demand and platform. Source: ResRequest
of US adults prefer to book long-distance travel on a phone, in a February 2025 survey of 2,200+ people. Only 28% of Baby Boomers do, against 64% of Gen Z. Source: PYMNTS Intelligence
These are general figures for online travel agents, not specific to safari agents, and commission varies by platform and market. Agents' commission is usually built into the rate the guest pays rather than added on top, so every booking that comes direct keeps that margin with the lodge.
Your own site
A 10-point check for your own site
- This year's and next year's rates are on the page, by season, in the guest's likely currency.
- Inclusions and exclusions are listed line by line.
- Guests can check their own dates without sending an enquiry.
- There's a clear reason to book direct, stated on the homepage.
- At least one sample trip is priced in full.
- The site says honestly who the camp suits.
- Rates, rooms and booking all work well on a phone.
- Nothing on the homepage is out of date: footer year, offers, policies.
- Every contact link works and goes to someone who replies quickly.
- There's a reason to come back before booking: news, sightings, stories.
Try it live
Want to see these habits in one site?
We built Enkaji, a concept lodge site that puts guests on the deck of their tent in 3D, in the real light at the camp right now, with the animals that are actually out at that hour. It prices the stay live and shows what they save by booking direct. Try it, then tell us about your lodge.
